Contact lens blister pack recycling: where the empty packs, foils, and lenses actually go

Two blister packs a day, seven days a week, is more than 700 small plastic cups and 700 aluminum lids a year from one wearer. Almost none of it belongs in a household recycling bin, and none of it belongs in the sink. Here is what each component is, why curbside sorting rejects it, the one free US program that takes all brands, and a routine that survives contact with a real bathroom counter.

The short answer

The lens itself goes in the trash, never the drain

Arizona State University researchers who studied contact lens disposal nationwide recommend placing used lenses in the trash with other solid waste. Flushing sends them to a wastewater plant, where the study found they break apart into microplastics that end up in sewage sludge. A used lens is not curbside material and it is not drain material.

The plastic cup and the foil lid are not ordinary curbside items

A blister pack is a small, shallow plastic cup sealed with a thin aluminum lid. It is a mixed-material item smaller than most things a sorting line is built to catch. The outer carton is the easy part

The paperboard box your 30-pack or 90-pack arrives in is large enough for standard sorting equipment to catch. The ONE by ONE program specifically asks you not to send outer cardboard and paperboard, because it belongs in your normal curbside recycling instead.

One pack is four or five different disposal problems stacked on top of each other. Sorting them mentally once is what makes the routine automatic afterwards.

The lens

Material
A soft hydrogel or silicone hydrogel polymer. The ASU team examined 13 brands built from 9 different polymer types.
Where it goes
Trash, or a ONE by ONE collection bin. Never the sink or the toilet.
Why
Lenses are too small and too wet for curbside sorting, and they do not survive wastewater treatment intact. The ASU study found roughly a pair of lenses for every 2 pounds of wastewater sludge sampled.

The plastic blister cup

Material
A small molded plastic well, usually polypropylene, holding a few milliliters of packing solution.
Where it goes
A ONE by ONE collection bin, or the trash if no bin is reachable and your local program does not accept it.
Why
It is smaller and flatter than the bottles and jugs a sorting line is tuned for. ACUVUE tells wearers to check with their local recycling center about whether the cup is accepted at all.

The foil lid

Material
A thin aluminum laminate bonded to the plastic rim, printed with the lens parameters.
Where it goes
A ONE by ONE bin. ACUVUE says that outside such a program the foil belongs in the trash.
Why
Aluminum is valuable and highly recyclable in bulk, but a lid the size of a postage stamp is not a form a household program can recover. Take-back programs handle it because they sort by material after collection.

The paperboard carton and the insert

Material
Printed paperboard and a paper instruction leaflet.
Where it goes
Ordinary curbside recycling.
Why
This is the one component that works in a normal household bin. ONE by ONE asks you to leave outer cardboard out of the collection bin for exactly that reason.

The plastic tray inside some cartons

Material
A molded holder that keeps the strip of packs aligned.

Check your local program. Trash if it is not listed.
Why
Rigid plastic packaging varies by program more than almost any other material. Local acceptance lists are the only reliable answer.

Why the blue bin is the wrong answer

It feels wrong to throw away something stamped with a resin code. The instinct is good and the outcome is not, because acceptance is a question about equipment and markets rather than about the plastic itself. Four reasons a blister pack loses that argument:

Sorting lines separate by size and shape before they ever look at the plastic

The Association of Plastic Recyclers describes the sequence at a materials recovery facility: large cardboard comes off first, flat two-dimensional paper rides over the screens, and three-dimensional containers drop through them for further sorting. Optical sorters, magnets, and eddy currents come later. A blister pack is small, shallow, and neither reliably flat nor reliably a container, so it enters the line as an item the geometry was not designed around. For scale, the same description notes that crushed glass smaller than two inches falls through the sift entirely.

It is two materials fused together

Recycling economics depend on clean, separated streams. A blister pack arrives as plastic bonded to aluminum, and pulling the two apart is a job for a dedicated processor rather than a household. That is precisely what a take-back program adds: TerraCycle states that collected material is cleaned, separated by material type, and turned into raw formats manufacturers can use again.

It usually still holds packing solution

A freshly opened pack is wet. Liquid is a contaminant in a recycling stream, and the ONE by ONE instructions ask for materials that are empty and dry, with as much remaining product removed as possible. No cleaning is required beyond that. Letting packs air-dry for a day before they join a collection jar handles this completely.

The manufacturer will tell you the same thing

This is not an environmentalist framing imposed on the industry. ACUVUE's sustainability page states plainly that in the US you cannot recycle the contact lenses themselves because they are too small, and advises checking with your local recycling center about the plastic lens cup while treating the separated foil as trash. When the brand's own guidance is that cautious, wishcycling the pack into the blue bin is not a neutral act.

None of this means the packs are worthless. It means they need a collection route built for small mixed-material items, which is what a take-back program is.

The one free US program that takes every brand

How to prepare the materials
Empty and dry. Remove as much remaining product as you can. Cleaning the packaging is not required.
What it costs
Nothing. Bausch + Lomb sponsors the program, so there is no direct cost to the participant.

The drain is the part that actually matters

Of everything on this page, one habit carries measured downstream consequences, and it is the one that takes no effort at all to fix. A team at Arizona State University led by Rolf Halden, with Charles Rolsky and Varun Kelkar, ran what they described as the first nationwide study of the environmental costs of contact lenses and presented the results at the 256th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston on August 19, 2018.

They surveyed disposal behavior and estimated that 15 to 20 percent of wearers flush lenses down the sink or the toilet. Across the US wearer population that works out to roughly 1.8 to 3.36 billion lenses a year, on the order of 20 to 23 metric tonnes of wastewater-borne plastic. The team examined 13 brands made from 9 polymer types and traced what happens next: the lenses reach wastewater treatment plants, where they fragment into microplastics that settle into sewage sludge. Their sampling found roughly a pair of lenses for every 2 pounds of sludge.

The researchers' own recommendation is unglamorous and free: place used lenses in the trash with other solid waste. If a ONE by ONE bin is within reach, better again. But the meaningful decision is made at the sink in the two seconds after a lens comes out, and no recycling program can reach a lens that already went down the drain.

A collection routine that survives a real morning

Good intentions lose to bathroom logistics every time. The version of this that works has one collection point, one drying step, and one trip you were already making.

    Give the empties one container, not five

    The reason most people do not recycle blister packs is logistical rather than moral. Empties get produced at the bathroom sink twice a day, in ones and twos, and the collection point is somewhere else entirely. Put one small jar or tin where you actually open the packs. That single decision converts the whole thing from a daily judgment call into a reflex.

    Tip out the packing solution, set the pack on the rim of the jar for a day, then drop it in. Dry material is what the program asks for, and a dry jar does not develop a smell over the months it takes to fill.

    The used lens goes into the trash or into the same collection jar. Not the sink, not the toilet, not even when you are in a hurry. This is the single highest-impact habit in the entire routine, because it is the one with a measured downstream cost attached.

    When a 90-day supply arrives, flatten the shipping box and the paperboard cartons and put them in curbside recycling right then. Those are the components the household system genuinely handles well, and getting them out of the way keeps the small-material jar honest.

    Batch the drop-off to a trip you already make

    Nobody drives across town to deliver a jar of blister packs. Attach the drop-off to your annual eye exam, a glasses adjustment, or a pickup at the practice. A year of daily wear produces a container that is still smaller than a shoebox, which is a comfortable thing to carry to an appointment you were attending anyway.

    Keep the unopened packs organized while you are at it

    The empties problem and the full-packs problem are the same problem viewed from opposite ends. A supply that lives in one place, with left and right separated, produces a predictable stream of empties from a predictable spot. A supply scattered across a drawer, a gym bag, and a suitcase produces empties everywhere, and those are the ones that end up in the wrong bin.

Worth separating from all this: buying fewer lenses is not the lever. Wear schedule is a clinical decision that belongs to you and your prescriber, and daily disposables exist because they suit many wearers' eyes and routines. The lever available to you is what happens to the packaging afterward.

Common disposal mistakes

Each of these is easy to make and easy to stop making once you have seen it named.

Flushing a lens because it seems too small to matter

The ASU team estimated that 15 to 20 percent of wearers flush lenses, adding up to something on the order of 1.8 to 3.36 billion lenses per year in the US, or roughly 20 to 23 metric tonnes of wastewater-borne plastic. The individual lens is trivial. The aggregate is not, and the fix costs nothing.

Tossing wet blister packs straight into the blue bin

Wishcycling a small wet mixed-material item does not make it recyclable. It rides the line and is screened out anyway. Dry the packs and hold them for a take-back drop-off, or put them in the trash and be honest about it.

Assuming your brand runs its own US take-back program

The all-brands US collection route runs through Bausch + Lomb ONE by ONE with TerraCycle. ACUVUE's US guidance points wearers at their local recycling center rather than at a national lens collection program. Waiting to start until you have found a drop-off location

Start the jar today and find the location later. Materials only need to be empty and dry. If you never find a location, the jar becomes one clean trash disposal instead of 365 scattered ones, which is still an improvement over flushing.

Trying to reduce waste by re-wearing a daily disposable

A single-use lens is prescribed for one use. Re-wearing one to cut packaging waste trades a small environmental gain for a clinical risk your prescriber did not sign off on. Follow your prescription, the lens labeling, and your eye care professional's directions.

Sending the shipping box and cartons to the take-back bin

The unopened side of the same routine
